Worship-In-A-Nutshell

SCRIPTURE: Oh, how great are God’s riches and wisdom and knowledge! How impossible it is for us to understand his decisions and his ways! For who can know the Lord’s thoughts? Who knows enough to give him advice? And who has given him so much that he needs to pay it back? For everything comes from him and exists by his power and is intended for his glory. All glory to him forever! Amen. Romans 11:33-36 NLT

THOUGHT: With a rich text like this, where do we start? I think to boil it down to a bite-sized spiritual breakfast, everything that’s right begins and ends with worship.

Like the scene burned on my memory from the often-sacrilegious and always satirical Bruce Almighty (the one where God breaks it to a surprised Bruce he hasn’t been ruling the entire world, just a couple of city blocks in Buffalo), if we start out with anything except worship, our perception is skewed. But if we come to a full realization that everything from beginning to ending comes from God, everything around us continues to exist only by his power, and every bit of it was intended to bring him glory, there are only two things that can happen, pretty much simultaneously: 1) we fall on our knees in awe, and 2) we realize just how much there is to be confessed to clean us up and set us on the right path again.

Pretty much worship in a nutshell.

PRAYER: Give us an epiphany of your greatness, God. With proper perspective, our awe and our confession will spill out like the breath in our lungs.
