SCRIPTURE: You are the light of the world. A town built on a hill cannot be hidden. Neither do people light a lamp and put it under a bowl. Instead they put it on its stand, and it gives light to everyone in the house. Matthew 5:14-15 NIV
THOUGHT: Like salt, one of lights’ most amazing properties is that it works by permeating. You start with a little and it spreads out, and out, and out. Jesus’ emphatic statement was not “go be light of the world,” it was “you are the light of the world.” We have several choices, but not a single one of them is to not be light. We can hide it in a whole variety of ways. We can keep it low to the ground, hoping to fly under the radar and not attract any bugs. We can live our lives under a bowl, says Jesus, but it really isn’t intelligent. Or, we can just do with light what makes the most sense: let it go, let it out, let it shine, let it permeate. People need to see.
PRAYER: Jesus, you remind us that we were made for a purpose – to live in such a way that people can see God better. We shine because you made us to shine. May we not dim or dumb our light down, but put it on a stand so it sheds your light even further.
