Invisible, But Real

SCRIPTURE: By faith we understand that the universe was formed at God’s command, so that what is seen was not made out of what was visible. Hebrews 11:3 NIV

THOUGHT: The famed ‘hall of faith’ in Hebrews 11 names many individuals of great faith whose stories are told in the Old Testament, but I find it interesting that the list begins, not with a human, but with the act of creation by God’s command. Perhaps the writer is even suggesting that forming the universe out of nothing (creatio ex nihilo) was an act of faith by its Creator? The writer says just prior, “Now faith is confidence in what we hope for and assurance about what we do not see (v. 1).” God meets the criteria: confidence in what he hoped for, and assurance about what was invisible. Out of those intangibles, God created heavens and earth and animals and people – and asked us to follow his example of living out faith, even when we can’t see.

PRAYER: Oh God, as with Jesus, you don’t ask us to do what you are not willing to do, setting an example even in the matter of having faith for what we cannot see. Thank you for your immense power and joy in creating the world out of nothing, and thank you for your immense energy and long-suffering in continuing to love and sustain what you created. Forgive those who would say because you are invisible to us, you are not real.
