Eternal

SCRIPTURE: He has made everything beautiful in its time. Also, he has put eternity into man’s heart, yet so that he cannot find out what God has done from the beginning to the end. Ecclesiastes 3:11 NIV

THOUGHT: There are an astonishing number of people who want to live forever without God, and are laying plans to do just that, using biotechnology to preserve the mind even if the body dies, giving those who can afford it multiple bodies of their choice, living virtually or as avatars, or replicating and replacing their organs using 3-D printer technology. Speaking of eternal – the perpetual search for the fountain of youth goes on.

When God gave humans life, he breathed into us – gave us his spirit. In fact, the words “breath” and “spirit” are the same in Hebrew, ruach, used in this context. In this way, God has put eternity into our hearts. We certainly don’t contain all of God, but we have enough that we enter the mystery of longing for eternity but not being able to get there by ourselves. It’s on purpose – the doors to the Garden of Eden and the tree of life are locked. We were made as eternal beings, but our earthly lives now end in death due to sin. I don’t think God is going to change his mind on that.

PRAYER: I don’t mind this longing for eternity, Father, give me more of it. But remove any notion that I could ever want to be stuck in eternal life without you as my God and Savior.
