SCRIPTURE: Oh, my anguish, my anguish! I writhe in pain. Oh, the agony of my heart! My heart pounds within me, I cannot keep silent. For I have heard the sound of the trumpet; I have heard the battle cry. Disaster follows disaster; the whole land lies in ruins. In an instant my tents are destroyed, my shelter in a moment. How long must I see the battle standard and hear the sound of the trumpet? Jeremiah 4:19-21
THOUGHT: Jeremiah was a holy man, a friend of God tapped to prophesy and watch an unholy terror unfold, not unlike the one we are witnessing on the other side of the world. I don’t write about the whole of Jeremiah’s mission, I write only about how it felt to watch and cry out to see the end of the standard and trumpet. I write because I know many hearts are aching for the people of Afghanistan and the Americans left there. Those who’ve heard the battle cry and seen the disaster. One rescue mission director and former special operations pilot, Peter Quinn, describes it like this: “This is 1936 Germany Gestapo meets the Hunger Games. It is a high tension, high panic, Anne Frank-like environment.”
Today, take time out to pray for Quinn and his friends who continue their rescue mission, and pray for the people, running and hiding as their shelter is destroyed, literally and metaphorically.
PRAYER: Answer me quickly, Lord; my spirit fails. Do not hide your face from me or I will be like those who go down to the pit. Let the morning bring me word of your unfailing love, for I have put my trust in you. Show me the way I should go, for to you I entrust my life. Rescue me from my enemies, Lord, for I hide myself in you. (Psalm 143:7-9 NIV)
