Meditations on a King’s Prayer, 2

SCRIPTURE: May God, our very own God, continue to be with us just as he was with our ancestors—may he never give up and walk out on us. May he keep us centered and devoted to him, following the life path he has cleared, watching the signposts, walking at the pace and rhythms he laid down for our ancestors. 1 Kings 8:57-58 MSG

THOUGHT: A read through the whole chapter will reveal that Solomon realized a few things about people: they were fallible, they fought and argued with each other, wars would come, calamity would come…sin would happen. But in advance of all that, on a day the sun was shining and all seemed right with the world, Solomon prayed that whenever sinning people turned back toward God in repentance, that God would hear, would never give up and walk out. And, what’s more, he asked God to do the work that the people should, by all rights, be doing themselves: keeping them centered, following hard, walking in faithfulness. “May he keep us centered and devoted to him,” Solomon prayed. It would seem the king had almost as much compassion on the people as does The King.

PRAYER: You named yourself a compassionate God, keeping steadfast love to a thousand generations, forgiving sins and iniquity and transgression. Thank you, God. Thank you for answering Solomon’s prayer that day – and for hearing my prayers today.
