Meditations on a King’s Prayer, 4

SCRIPTURE: And you, your lives must be totally obedient to God, our personal God, following the life path he has cleared, alert and attentive to everything he has made plain this day. 1 Kings 8:61 MSG

THOUGHT: At the end of his prayer, Solomon turns his attention to the people of his kingdom for his final words. Rather than demanding allegiance to an earthly king and kingdom, he exhorts them to give their full obedience to God, following what they already know, and staying alert and attentive to what has already been made plain. That’s because Solomon knows (as did the founders of our own country) that people who follow God’s ways will naturally build good relationships, good families, and solid cultures. He knows his own imperfections (read any wisdom literature of the Bible and you’ll see) too well, following him will only lead to a camel-train-wreck. Following God, this personal God, on the life path he has cleared, was and is the only way to find human flourishing. Forget utopia, follow God.

PRAYER: Oh God, we see how following your ways led to flourishing – and we see how forgetting them led to disaster, over and over. Above and beyond what any king or culture or ruler or boss says, help us remain obedient to you, following, alert and attentive to everything we already know.
