SCRIPTURE: In the beginning was the Word…. John 1:1 NIV
THOUGHT: Some of us are action people, and we say things like “don’t tell me, show me!” But if you ever thought that ideas weren’t all that important, the beginning of both Genesis and John can change your mind – and, of course, so can a look around our culture. Ideas are shaping people, clashing, churning, even burning.
Jesus teaches that whatever is in the heart makes its way out through words. “For out of the abundance of the heart the mouth speaks. The good person out of his good treasure brings forth good, and the evil person out of his evil treasure brings forth evil (Matt. 12:34-35).” Language is more key to the human race than we know, and different languages was a tactic of God to both separate people intent on replacing him, as well as to spread the good news about who he was.
Words matter. With words God creates matter out of the abundance of his own heart. In a title that supersedes all others, his son Jesus is named “the Word.” Take a moment today to think about the power of your own words and what is flowing out of the abundance of your own heart.

PRAYER: Oh God of heart, and breath of life, and Word and words, thank you for dwelling in me. May each breath I use to create words today be sacred, formed in the abundance of what you have done in me.
