Indescribable

SCRIPTURE: The Son is the image of the invisible God, the firstborn over all creation. For in him all things were created: things in heaven and on earth, visible and invisible, whether thrones or powers or rulers or authorities; all things have been created through him and for him. Colossians 1:15-16 NIV

THOUGHT: Such powerful words – beautiful and powerful with fresh insight on the primal event of world history. Paul adds color and texture to John’s beautiful prologue, “In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. He was with God in the beginning. Through him all things were made; without him nothing was made that has been made. (Jn. 1:1-3)”

Taken together, the passages tell us that Jesus was much more than a great teacher, or prophet, or holy man. And he wasn’t simply born under miraculous circumstances either. He existed before he was born and is the exact image of God. His authority and creative power over every single thing, visible and invisible is unimaginable. It’s all his. Created through him and for him.

Now, imagine leaving all of that to come and die – because that was the only way to bridge the gap between you and your beloved creation. What you made and gave free will to didn’t love you, didn’t want to hear what you had to say, and was stained beyond recognition. You paid the price to create it once, and would pay the price to recreate and redeem it again.

PRAYER: You are amazing, Father, Son and Holy Spirit. Perfect from the beginning of time, yet making time and space for humans who so often ignore the truth of their own purpose in creation. Forgive us, oh Creator God. Thank you for “God With Us,” Immanuel. A God who gets his hands dirty in both creation and re-creation.
