Learning God

SCRIPTURE: He is the Rock, his works are perfect, and all his ways are just. A faithful God who does no wrong, upright and just is he. Deut. 32:4 NIV

THOUGHT: Yesterday I wrote about faith being the basic ingredient to relationship with the triune God, just as flour is basic to baking, and engines basic to trucks. But even basic ingredients are fired and shaped, ground and sifted. So with faith. We don’t just wake up one day mouthing the words of Deuteronomy 32:4 (and neither did Moses, who wrote it at the end of his life and ministry), but its words are grist for the mill. We learn God.

Someone somewhere sets a good example, hopefully our parents, but if not, a grandparent or sibling or teacher or pastor. A soldier in the trenches beside us. A healer, who comes along to rescue, bind up our wounds and pay for some lodging while we mend. And all the while, we walk in the promise that God himself will be our teacher (Ps. 27:10-11), and the Spirit of truth our guide (Jn. 16:13).

Like a blind person learning braille, we learn God. In the dark, our fumbling hands find the Rock; we lean, we find shelter and reward. We learn to trust God’s works and ways. We learn to rely on – and understand our desperation for – his faithfulness and goodness.

PRAYER: Thank you, God, for the processing. I don’t always appreciate learning you when it’s dark, but I’m grateful for the growing evidence of things not seen.
