SCRIPTURE: The kings of the earth rise up and the rulers band together against the Lord and against his anointed, saying, “Let us break their chains and throw off their shackles.” The One enthroned in heaven laughs; the Lord scoffs at them. Psalm 2:1-4 NIV
THOUGHT: So, what makes God laugh? The Bible mentions laugh or laughter in some form of the word almost 40 times (NIV) and I mean to do a study on that, but for today, three of those times talk about God laughing. Apparently, the foolishness of humans who plot against God or the lover of God makes God laugh, at least according to the Psalmist. The other two occurrences are: Psalm 37:12-13 “The wicked plot against the righteous and gnash their teeth at them; but the Lord laughs at the wicked, for he knows their day is coming,” and Psalm 59:8 “But you laugh at them, Lord; you scoff at all those nations.”
As I said to my brother yesterday, it’s both funny and fearful to imagine God, sitting on his throne, breaking out into laughter. It seems our Leader has a sense of humor, although it may be a little sardonic. God’s power is untouchable; his victory is certain; his weapons are not like the world’s weapons – and I know this for sure: I never, ever want God in this context to be laughing at me!
PRAYER: Someday, God, I’d like to hear your laughter as it rings through heaven and earth. I’d like to hear you laugh as you finally overcome all enemies and bring renewal to all that belongs to you. But for today, it’s good to know you laugh at the foolishness of rulers and kings who exalt themselves against you and your children.
