SCRIPTURE: Do not be hasty with your mouth [speaking careless words or vows] or impulsive in thought to bring up a matter before God. For God is in heaven and you are on earth; therefore let your words be few. Ecclesiastes 5:2 AMP
THOUGHT: As a king, Solomon had a unique perspective on this matter. He probably didn’t like it when he gave an audience and someone just rambled on and on with trivial complaints and angry rants. You need to have a specific point or question or request when you get an audience with the king.
It’s maybe a good idea to pair this advice from Solomon with Jesus’ words about the sparrows. God knows our needs before we even speak a word – and he is both kind and generous. But is that a reason to not pray? No. Paul advised pray without ceasing! But it is a reason to pray in faith rather than “worrying your prayers” as Peterson’s Message puts it in James 1:6. Don’t waste a bunch of breath on careless or impulsive words as Solomon says. Approach the King with awe, says the earthly king, yet with confidence, says the writer of Hebrews. Because he’s not just any King – he’s the one who created and sustains you – wove you together in your mother’s womb. He is, most truly, the lover of your soul.
