Tricky Business

SCRIPTURE: “This bread was warm from the oven when we packed it and left to come and see you. Now look at it—crusts and crumbs. And our cracked and mended wineskins, good as new when we filled them. And our clothes and sandals, in tatters from the long, hard traveling.” The men of Israel looked them over and accepted the evidence. But they didn’t ask God about it. Joshua 9:12-14

THOUGHT: Liars can be hard to spot. We can get sucked into people’s stories just like the leaders of Israel so long ago. We get filled with a sense of self-importance and go into action to resolve a problem that may not be ours to solve, or may not be a problem at all, just a manipulative ruse. The leaders of Israel even asked the right questions if you look at the larger story – they just didn’t ask God.

Decision-making is tricky business, especially now with the truth partially obscured on so many fronts. We need discernment, and that comes from asking God and learning to listen; maturing in relationship with God to the point of trusting our spiritual eyes more than our human ones. Daniel said, “He gives wisdom to the wise and knowledge to the discerning. He reveals deep and hidden things; he knows what lies in darkness, and light dwells with him (Daniel 2:21-22 NIV).

If you need to know what lies in darkness, ask God.

PRAYER: God who knows all and sees all, give us discernment for these days and times you have placed us in (Acts 17:26).
