The Strong Triangle

SCRIPTURE: In the same way, the Spirit helps us in our weakness. We do not know what we ought to pray for, but the Spirit himself intercedes for us through wordless groans. And he who searches our hearts knows the mind of the Spirit, because the Spirit intercedes for God’s people in accordance with the will of God. Romans 8:26-27 NIV

THOUGHT: When I start talking about engineering or math, better double check me, a sad fact my husband has learned the hard way. Still, I try, and this morning I’m thinking about the triangle and how it is used in bridges and other structural engineering due to its incredible strength.

It occurs to me as I examine Scripture’s teaching about the Spirit helping us in our weakness, and God knowing the mind of the Spirit, and Jesus living always to intercede that God has formed a protective triangle around us to bear the load, distribute the weight, and handle the tension of living in this world.

But lest we get lost in metaphor (which is not the intention of this devotional), the point is that when we are at a loss for words, both the Spirit and Jesus are interceding for us. When we are at a loss to know how to pray for God’s will, we can trust that both of them intimately understand the will of God and are praying it into our lives.

PRAYER: Thank you, Father, Son and Spirit for knowing our thoughts, making intelligent petitions of our groans and sighs, and caring enough to watch and listen in the first place!
