Thanksgiving Meditation 1: For the Beauty of the Earth

SCRIPTURE: When I consider your heavens, the work of your fingers, the moon and the stars, which you have set in place, what is mankind that you are mindful of them, human beings that you care for them? You have made them a little lower than the angels and crowned them with glory and honor. Psalm 8:3-5 NIV

THOUGHT: I love the season of Thanksgiving, these days of green and gold and red and orange all blurring together until they remind me of something Renoir would paint. I love the rustling of leaves winging their way down from former glory to light up the lawn or road or river for a day or two. I love the smell of woodsmoke from the first fires of the season, the smell of leaves burning in a barrel, the smell of the apple orchard, and a hundred other smells that come with this season. So much is at its end, yet what a glorious end it is as earth pours itself out on our behalf before winter.

When I consider the heavens, the work of God’s fingers, the harvest moon, or the way the stars shine on a clear, cold night. When I look at all the beauty of the earth, I do wonder – with all of amazing creation to attend to – why did God want our company? He surely didn’t need us, so he must have wanted us, don’t you think?

PRAYER: I am so grateful these days, Father, when I look around creation. Thank you for the example of beautiful endings, of earth giving of itself to bless us. I bless you for creating it all and giving us a place in it.
