Thanksgiving Meditation 3: I Shall Not Want

SCRIPTURE: Two things I ask of you, Lord; do not refuse me before I die: Keep falsehood and lies far from me; give me neither poverty nor riches, but give me only my daily bread. Otherwise, I may have too much and disown you and say, ‘Who is the Lord?’ Or I may become poor and steal, and so dishonor the name of my God. Proverbs 30:7-9 NIV

THOUGHT: Gratitude does not depend on plenty.

We typically celebrate the holiday season in a giant blur of spending and baking and gatherings, but the impulse for Thanksgiving came out of a time of want and need. It was about finding what was available in a time of scarcity and sharing it with people you wouldn’t ordinarily gather with. It was about practicing contentment and appreciation even when things weren’t perfect. With Paul, our grateful hearts can say:

I know what it is to be in need, and I know what it is to have plenty. I have learned the secret of being content in any and every situation, whether well fed or hungry, whether living in plenty or in want (Phil. 4:12 NIV).

PRAYER: Your word says to give thanks in every circumstance because this is your will (1 Thes. 5:18). Shape and mold me into a person of gratitude not just at Thanksgiving, but at all times in all circumstances, Lord.
