Thanksgiving Meditation 5: Now Thank We All Our God

SCRIPTURE: The trumpeters and musicians joined in unison to give praise and thanks to the Lord. Accompanied by trumpets, cymbals and other instruments, the singers raised their voices in praise to the Lord and sang: “He is good; his love endures forever.” Then the temple of the Lord was filled with the cloud, and the priests could not perform their service because of the cloud, for the glory of the Lord filled the temple of God. 2 Chronicles 5:13-14 NIV

THOUGHT: It was the first worship service in the first-ever temple. It was an “in unison” Thanksgiving Service. God had said he doesn’t dwell in a house made with human hands, but for this temple built by Solomon, he makes an exception. “From the day I brought my people out of the land of Egypt, I have never chosen a city among any of the tribes of Israel as the place where a Temple should be built to honor my name. Nor have I chosen a king to lead my people Israel. But now I have chosen Jerusalem as the place for my name to be honored, and I have chosen David to be king over my people Israel (2 Chron. 6:5-6 NLT).”

The unified praise fills the space – imagine the sound of 120 trumpets in a stone cathedral! Imagine the ring of the cymbals and the warmth of the stringed instruments, joined by a choir of dedicated pastor-musicians all singing, over and over, “he is good; his love endures forever.” A single message; a single purpose. Now thank we all our God with hearts and minds and voices. And the presence of the Lord was so powerfully present, the service couldn’t go on.

PRAYER: O bounteous God through all our life be near us, to fill our hearts with joy and blessed peace to cheer us. Oh keep us in your grace, and guide us when perplexed, and free us from all ills in this world and the next.
