Thanksgiving Meditation 9: Everything We Need

SCRIPTURE: Meanwhile, the disciples were urging Jesus, “Rabbi, eat something.” But Jesus replied, “I have a kind of food you know nothing about.” John 4:31-32 NLT

LYRIC THOUGHT: Tucked between my children’s autumn dreams and thoughts of stockings hanging heavy by the fire / I still sit in wonder at the endless plunder / of a harvest moon on fruitful fields of white.

And packages with bows can’t compare with those you’ve given / I feel thanksgiving filling me tonight. / Thanks for the hearts that surround me, thanks for the thought that so profoundly keeps this world spinning ‘round me, aright: / You’ve given me everything, everything, everything I need. / You’ve given me everything, everything, everything I need.

Set apart from everything that fills my barns and cupboards – whether empty or bursting at the seams / there’s a fullness in my heart where thanksgiving has its start / I’ve tasted of your kindness, been invited to your feast.

Wish the world could stop right now / on this silent, holy night this year / with gratitude still hanging in the air. / But if you choose to bring the dawn / I will keep walking on / in an abundance the world will never know.

‘Cause packages with bows can’t compare with those you’ve given / I feel thanksgiving filling me tonight. / These are the hearts I want around me, these are the thoughts that so profoundly keep this world spinning ‘round me, aright: / You’ve given us everything, everything, everything we need. / You’ve given us everything, everything, everything we need.

PRAYER: You’ve reminded me in recent weeks, dear Father, that gratitude doesn’t begin in plenty. There is an abundance even in lack and want and need that the world will never know. Give us a fresh taste today of your kindness and another invitation to your harvest and the feast that follows.
