Thanksgiving Meditation 10: Football & Thanksgiving

SCRIPTURE: Surely goodness and mercy and unfailing love shall follow me all the days of my life, And I shall dwell forever [throughout all my days] in the house and in the presence of the Lord. Psalm 23:6 AMP

THOUGHT: It’s the last of the Thanksgiving meditations this year, so I’m picking on an American pastime. For a lot of people, Thanksgiving is synonymous with football. Yesterday there were NFL and college games to fill all day and night, and you might have even over-indulged and ended up ungrateful, depending on outcomes.

I don’t know everything about football, but there are a few things I know and love. One of them is the hang time of a perfect punt. It comes at a rather tense moment when the drive has been unsuccessful, then, sometimes, it turns into one of the most beautiful moments of a game. The ball goes airborne, lofting its way down the field – and often for those 4+ seconds, the stadium goes quiet. Ray Guy, who punted his way into the NFL Hall of Fame, once had an 8-second hang time on a 71-yard punt according to one fan. Over his pro career for the Raiders (’73 to ’86), Guy punted 1049 times for an astonishing 44,493 yards. His opposition once tested his football for helium because his hang time was so unnatural. No helium found.

But what does this have to do with faith? Well, I suggest that the hang time of our gratitude should be as beautiful and last a lot longer than a Ray Guy unnatural punt. Chances are if we make that our goal, we won’t overindulge and end up ungrateful.
