SCRIPTURE: I say to the Lord, “You are my Lord; apart from you I have no good thing.” Psalm 16:2 NIV
THOUGHT: I used to think it was trite or pretentious to say something like David says in Psalm 16:2. Of course I have good things apart from God. And what kind of needy god requires that we attribute everything good to him, anyway? Something has changed. I got a bigger view of God somewhere along the journey, and I also got perspective on how big I am by contrast, and how little of the good that happens in my life can be attributed to me. I also learned that despite my good intentions, I could mess things up, royally. I guess you could say I got humbled, and I bet you know what I’m talking about.
When God really became “my LORD,” as David says, it colored everything. Instead of comparing myself so much to others, I began to see God’s word as my measuring stick and Jesus as my hero. I began to experience what one pastor said, “the Christian life isn’t hard…it’s impossible!” The feat of perfected love or peace or self-discipline couldn’t just be imitated, it had to be grown supernaturally through my desire to lay down my own agenda and abide in Christ.
PRAYER: Oh LORD, you are my Lord; apart from you I have no good thing.
