SCRIPTURE: In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. He was with God in the beginning. Through him all things were made; without him nothing was made that has been made. John 1:1-3 NIV

The first advent of Jesus brought a lot of light into the world, but many people missed it. Light is helpful, even miraculous the way it exposes everything — from the beautiful, to the mundane, to the downright evil. Journey with author and blogger Amy Clemens as she explores the advent of one who said he was the light of the world…a light that shines in darkness…that exposes. A light that will make a second advent, with a power and glory no one will miss.
THOUGHT: When I toured with Up With People (a long, long time ago), the tech guys started a joke that persisted – they told one slightly gullible cast member that our backdrop would be connected to ‘sky hooks’ at an outdoor arena and she believed them. Interesting to imagine, but you just can’t hook something on thin air. In the same vein, you need to start building with a good foundation, or it will collapse just like our laughable backdrop hung on sky hooks would have.
The gospel writer John (also a disciple and close friend of Jesus) understood the importance of foundations, so he starts the story of Advent with parallels between the birth of Jesus and the birth of everything known, and you can’t get a wider foundation than that. It was mysterious, it was miraculous (a little bit like sky hooks?!) and there was nothing mundane about any of John’s opening sentences. Jesus is more than a body, Jesus is a word, The Word, and the words of God always achieve God’s purposes (Is. 55:11). And if that’s not enough mystery, Jesus wasn’t just there observing, he was there creating and was, in very essence, God. The Word was God. That’s a lot to take in – I hope you’ll spend some time today thinking about this Word that made its advent from God’s mouth to our world. God here, seen, known, historically recorded for those who need to touch the truth. But then again, I ponder the words of The Word wrapped in flesh, “blessed are those who have not seen and yet have believed.” (John 20:29).”
PRAYER: Mysterious, miraculous God in Three, we cannot comprehend it all, but you’ve helped us see that faith that doesn’t require an answer to every question. In your world, there are sky hooks and foundations we cannot see, and we pray for the blessing you promised those who have not seen and yet believe.
