SCRIPTURE: “I am the vine; you are the branches. Those who remain in me, and I in them, will produce much fruit. For apart from me you can do nothing. John 15:5 NLT
THOUGHT: Fruitfulness is something I think a lot about, although I might call it something different, like meaning or impact. Life feels short. The amount of time to learn, grow and be productive feels squeezed like a lemon wedge into iced tea. There’s only so much you can get out of it, however much flavor might remain.
Jesus makes a promise about fruitfulness that restores my right-thinking when I try and try to squeeze the lemon and just get a drip or two. Being connected to the source of all things, the vine, is the only way to the life I desire. I have to stop putting effort into squeezing every possible drop out of life and use my passion to strengthen the bond between branch and vine. The gardener will take care of fruitfulness; but the first rule of his green thumb is that branches off the vine won’t be growing anything.
PRAYER: Jesus, I used to be irritated when I read your words that apart from you, I couldn’t do anything. I set out to prove that I could. That I didn’t need you in order to make things happen. Time and wisdom have shown me truth. I long for your kind of fruitfulness and so I will remain in you.
