Categorically Trustworthy

SCRIPTURE: You know in your hearts and souls, all of you, that not one word has failed of all the good things that the Lord your God promised concerning you. All have come to pass for you; not one of them has failed. Joshua 23:14 ESV

THOUGHT: Honestly, we have little to no frame of reference for trustworthiness such as God delivers. Each of us has known and loved many people over our lives, many of us have been blessed with spouses and children, and a wealth of opportunities at home, in church and at work to both trust and be trusted. But I bet you, like I, can’t think of a single relationship where there hasn’t been some disappointment, some anger, some loss, some forgiveness needed, some broken promises.

We just can’t put God in the same category because God is categorically trustworthy. As Joshua comes to the end of his life and leadership assignments, he ironically points people back rather than forward, and on the cusp of a new year, we need to look back too. The only reason we can handle whatever the future brings is because, “not one word has failed of all the good things that the Lord your God promised concerning you.”

God promises through the prophet Jeremiah, “I am alert and active, watching over My word to perform it (Jer. 1:12 AMP).” So when God purposes something – when it becomes his word – he begins to watch over it, tending actively like a vineyard owner would tend soil and seed and tender shoots and full vines and fruit, and not stopping until the thing is accomplished, whether it takes a moment or a millennium.

PRAYER: God, I am so grateful for your uncompromising faithfulness, your categorical trustworthiness. Because of your history of keeping promises, I can face the future with peace. Continue to perform your word in me.
