It May Look Like I’m Surrounded

SCRIPTURE: The angel of the Lord encamps around those who fear him, and he delivers them. Psalm 34:7 NIV

THOUGHT: There’s the simple zoom lens, then there’s the ultra-wide-angle zoom. Spiritually speaking, to God belongs the ultra-wide-angle zoom, while we often pull out the zoom, and like a magnifying mirror, use it to view what we fear at larger-than-life proportions. He sees the whole picture, not just the part that’s terrifyingly close. And occasionally, we get to glimpse what he sees.

2 Kings 6 tells the story of the prophet Elisha and his servant, and the chance to see through the great wide-angle-zoom of God. The servant is frightened to wake up and find they are surrounded by an enemy:

“’Don’t be afraid,’ the prophet answered. ‘Those who are with us are more than those who are with them.’ And Elisha prayed, ‘Open his eyes, Lord, so that he may see.’ Then the Lord opened the servant’s eyes, and he looked and saw the hills full of horses and chariots of fire all around Elisha (2 Kings 6:16-17 NIV).”

God has so many ways to deliver you and I that we couldn’t count them. What we can do is count on him. It may look like we’re surrounded, but we’re surrounded by God and the mighty angels who do his bidding (Ps. 103:20).

He is encamped around those who fear him.

PRAYER: Thank you, God, even when it looks like I’m surrounded and about to be overwhelmed, that there is another reality for those who respect and worship you.
