Full Disclosure

SCRIPTURE: So do not be afraid of them, for there is nothing concealed that will not be disclosed, or hidden that will not be made known. Matthew 10:26 NIV

THOUGHT: The context for this promise is Jesus coaching his disciples to not be afraid of the powers that be, including powerful political and religious leaders. To not worry about what you’re going to say or how you’re going to defend yourself when you’re hauled in and accused: God will give you the words at the right time. They will be his words (vs. 19-20).

What a promise. It is God whose reputation is at stake for those who trust him. It is God who will be disclosed; it is God who will be made known. In the big picture, it’s not really about us, it’s about God not being concealed or hidden.

In two other gospels (Mark 4:22, Luke 7:18), these same words are used in the context of the foolishness of hiding a lamp under a basket or bed (God being concealed). I can’t help but think that it’s not only foolish, it’s dangerous to put a flame under a basket or bed. Wouldn’t be prudent. What we’re looking for isn’t an inferno – although that’s promised too – it’s the light of the world that penetrates darkness and helps people see reality. There is a God, and he will not be hidden.

PRAYER: You’ve promised those who love you that you’ll provide the words, oh God, to disclose who you are. Help us to trust you, unafraid.
