In any and every circumstance I have learned the secret [of facing life], whether well-fed or going hungry, whether having an abundance or being in need. I can do all things [which He has called me to do] through Him who strengthens and empowers me [to fulfill His purpose—I am self-sufficient in Christ’s sufficiency; I am ready for anything and equal to anything through Him who infuses me with inner strength and confident peace.] Philippians 4:12-13 AMP
THOUGHT: There are always people who want to know the secrets of successful life, and for those pedaling the latest and greatest methods, people will jump through hoops of fire and spend prodigious amounts of money. There are exercise gigs, diet gigs, lifestyle gigs, success gigs, “how to” columns, podcasts, books, and symposiums. For every person eager to learn the secrets, it seems there is another equally ready to dispense advice.
But for Jesus, who promises contentment, strength, and peace in the face of any circumstance life can throw, the line of fans is shorter. There are some, thank God, in fact a great cloud of witnesses (Heb. 12:1) says Scripture, but the point is, Jesus doesn’t provide a “secret” way around obstacles, he provides a way through them. That’s not the message most people want.
The cost to the disciple is not up front – you can’t take cash out of your wallet to purchase what Jesus promises. The cost is time alone with the teacher, learning to listen for his voice, love his words, and lean into discernment through the Holy Spirit. The cost is in being convinced that his will is higher and better than your own, and that you can do every single thing he has called you to do because he will provide everything you need at the time it is needed. You will learn to trust the only one completely trustworthy. You will know the secret to facing life: not getting around obstacles – getting through them with grace, faith, and contentment.
PRAYER: God, help me listen, hear, and trust you more deeply today. Make me ready for anything and equal to anything through Jesus, who infuses me with inner strength and confident peace.
