Road Less Taken

SCRIPTURE: My yoke is easy and my burden is light. Matthew 11:30 NIV

THOUGHT: Robert Frost, in his classic poem, The Road Not Taken, confessed, “I took the one less traveled by / and that has made all the difference.” In faith as in life, there are diverging roads from which to choose, and it matters which road you go down.

It’s a tragedy when the spiritual commit themselves to becoming legal experts and miss all the grace and lightness of yoking up with Jesus. The same Jesus who promised walking and working with him as easy and light said, “Woe to you [experts in the law], because you load people down with burdens they can hardly carry, and you yourselves will not lift one finger to help them (Luke 11:46).”

Legalism is one pathway, and we’ve all known people who’ve taken it. In fact, one could make a case that most people fall in one ditch or the other, legalism, yoking up with rules and laws, or license, throwing off the yoke Jesus offers completely and just making it up as you go.

The path of grace belongs to those who are eternally grateful that they don’t have to pull the load themselves, Jesus will do the heavy lifting. And the fellowship of walking and working together will be so sweet, we’ll be ready to roll out of bed and join God in his work every morning. It is the Great Adventure, the road less taken.

PRAYER: I want to yoke up with grace, Jesus. I want to walk and work with you, enjoying your strength and fellowship all day long. Thank you for the promise that your yoke is easy and your burden light.
