SCRIPTURE: And we know [with great confidence] that God [who is deeply concerned about us] causes all things to work together [as a plan] for good for those who love God, to those who are called according to His plan and purpose. Romans 8:28 AMP
THOUGHT: You’ve probably heard this promise all of your Christian life. Sometimes it comes to you earnestly; sometimes it comes to you glibly, as if to say, “don’t sweat it, everything happens for a reason,” when you’ve just lost the love of your life, or your job, or your health. I picked the Amplified Version because I like the way it makes me listen all over again to the promise and forget the people who can’t think of anything else to say when the chips are down. They mean well.
The question when you’re in the middle of hurt is how in the world can God cause all of this to work together as a plan for good? I don’t know for certain, of course, no one does; the short answer is, “it’s a miracle.” But God is outside of time and space, and he can see both the end and beginning of things. I believe what happens in the middle may be mystery to him based on giving each person a will of their own. But as human will unfolds (not just ours, but others’ as well), God never stops watching and working. When he is watching his children, he sees every path that leads back to good, every road that leads home, and if we’re listening and trusting him – even in the dark (Is. 50:10), he is directing our steps, making a way that we cannot see with human eyes. The only time God can’t bring good out of a situation is if we don’t trust and won’t follow. And even then, for the child of God, he continues to watch and work.
Our God is the God of every possibility that leads to good.

PRAYER: Your promise to work something good even out of the worst losses of my life, God – it’s part of why I believe in you. I simply cannot see the way out sometimes. It takes someone with bigger vision and higher purpose.
