Rest assured.

SCRIPTURE: Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you and learn from me, for I am gentle and humble in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. Matthew 11:28-29 NIV

THOUGHT: Rest for the mind. Rest for the will. Rest for the emotions. Could you use some of that? It’s what Jesus promised weary and burdened pilgrims. I say ‘pilgrims’ because that is the way the writer of Hebrews described the life of faith: “they were strangers and pilgrims on the earth (Heb. 11:13).”

Pilgrimage is defined as a journey, especially a long one, made to some sacred place as an act of religious devotion. The Jesus-follower is on a pilgrimage. That we are strangers in this world becomes clearer every day. But we don’t stay on the pilgrimage because everything around us looks normal. And we don’t stay on the journey because it’s a bed of roses. The pilgrim has a destination that is worth the effort and a traveling companion who is strong, gentle, and humble.

Rest assured.

PRAYER: Thank you Jesus for the promise of rest when we yoke up with you on this sacred journey. It’s not the way of the world, but it’s the way of heaven.
