SCRIPTURE: The gifts and the calling of God are irrevocable. Romans 11:29 ESV
THOUGHT: You’ve probably heard news recently of prominent companies recalling millions of dollars of merchandise. Car manufacturers have done it. Health and beauty industries have done it. Food companies have done it. Even politicians can be recalled. And over the weekend, a big story broke about a chain store and its supposedly rat-infested warehouses. Lots of stuff recalled.
Well, unfortunately, mistakes happen. Greed happens. Rats happen. Even sloppy happens. Recalls happen. If you look at the FDA website, you’ll see they happen virtually every day.
We get used to thinking of things in this manner, but today’s reminder is that there is a parallel kingdom in which things happen very differently. There, perfection isn’t an ISO standard to strive for, benchmarks to compete for, or a slick marketing campaign to create problems that need solutions. Perfection isn’t limited by human or computer error. God doesn’t want to be perfect…God is perfect, and therefore there are no mistakes. I see evidence in Scripture for how God changes his mind about what is the most perfect strategy for a given situation, but I don’t see that great mind and heart changing about what is perfect.
The beauty, for us, is that God has made up his mind about you and me. He will love us. He will continue to shape and invest in our lives. He will stretch our faith. He will keep on offering correction. And he will never recall the gifts and call he has spoken over us. Some things are just irrevocable.
PRAYER: The promise that you will never take back the gifts and call you offered me the day I became your child, oh God, is a promise in which I find hope. Rather than relying on my ability to be perfect, my mental or physical muscle, or my will to succeed, you rely on your own perfect will. Please continue to do your good work. My life is yours.
