Waiting for God

SCRIPTURE: But they who wait for the Lord shall renew their strength; they shall mount up with wings like eagles; they shall run and not be weary; they shall walk and not faint. Isaiah 40:31 ESV

THOUGHT: Probably three weeks ago, I cut and pasted this scripture into the March 14 slot. This morning as I woke up and sat down to write, I saw it as a promise that feels almost prophetic. I need strength to go on. The news is so achingly bad, wherever I look. And yet, ironically, wherever I look, spring is on the way. There are daffodils blooming and trees leafing out, and robins and mockingbirds are calling, even with patches of snow still hanging on. I feel the crash of hope and despair. A muddling in my soul. A vying between the hellish and holy for my attention. And there, swinging between the two, I find the promise that waiting for the Lord is the path to renewal of strength, to soaring over difficulties with a 7-foot wingspan, to running the race with perseverance (Heb. 12:1), to steadily walking when I might rather faint.

This morning, I’ll take a little cue from the daffodils and trees. They rest and wait until the sun and rain say ‘it’s time!’ Then they burst out with the miraculous vigor of all things being ready. Their maker (and ours) set it up that way.

PRAYER: We are desperate for a different kind of strength than the world gives, oh God. Strength of character, strength of spirit, strength to go the distance in a world indifferent and often hostile to you. Hear and answer as we wait for you. Make all things ready; make all things new.
