SCRIPTURE: Jesus said to the people who believed in him, “You are truly my disciples if you remain faithful to my teachings. And you will know the truth, and the truth will set you free.” John 8:31-32 NLT
THOUGHT: They say that the work of children is play, and watching my little girls years ago, I loved and encouraged that play. I also saw that they couldn’t discern fantasy from truth, but it didn’t really bother me at the time as they twirled in princess costumes and drove around in a Barbie Jeep.
But watching their generation grow up, I came to fear so much investment in fantasy. From my observation, many kids morphed from fantasy play to a steady diet of dystopian novels and movies, to social media with all its posturing, to video gaming and virtual reality and an insatiable desire for artificial intelligence. The lines between truth and fiction have gotten far muddier, rather than clearing up as promised by the child psychologists of yesteryear. Today, there is a daily bombardment, not only for children and teens, but also adults to accept fantasy as reality. To override logic and reason and historical norms as if they are pebbles under the wheels of a Barbie Jeep.
All that stands between us and chaos is faith – and faithfulness to the teaching of Jesus, who promised freedom if we could tolerate and embrace truth, even when it jars against our ideologies.
The truth is life is not a fantasy; it is real, and gritty, and hard, and magnificent, and eternal. You don’t get super powers or a joystick to take out everyone who stands in your way. You either learn to live on truth from God and his Word (Jn. 17:17), or there is no truth. And you have to know the truth in order for it to set you free.
PRAYER: We want the rock to stand on, God (Ps. 40:2), not the fantasies of those who throw truth like pebbles under toy wheels. When we align ourselves with what you’ve said, you’ve assured us that you can do more than all we ask or imagine (Eph. 3:20), and wow, we stand in need of that.
