Masquerade

SCRIPTURE: Satan himself masquerades as an angel of light. 2 Cor. 11:14 NIV

THOUGHT: Doesn’t this promise from Scripture give you a little shiver? It’s one thing to see something bad coming and be able to run, or shoot, or pray – or all three at the same time. It’s another to be tricked into thinking something that looks beautiful and necessary is really evil in disguise. [And just in case you’re of the mind that no one really believes in evil anymore, would it shock you to note that Jesus mentions evil and its consequences 87 times throughout the four gospels (ESV)? He gives the entity 10 different names: evil, the evil one, Satan, devil, thief, prince of this world, ruler of this world, liar, father of lies, and murderer. By contrast, Jesus talks about love less than evil: 66 times in the same translation and the same four gospels.]

When evil works under disguise, we need help in a powerful way. We need the Spirit of wisdom (Eph. 1:17) and the Spirit of truth (John 14:17, 15:26, 16:13). We need the kind of perfect love that makes us unafraid (1 John 4:18), eyes focused on Jesus (Heb. 12:2) and a shield of faith that can extinguish all the fiery darts of the evil one (Eph. 6:16), even at the masquerade.

PRAYER: Deliver us from evil, oh Lord, in all its disguises.
