SCRIPTURE: Giving thanks to the Father, who has qualified us to share in the inheritance of the saints (God’s people) in the Light. For He has rescued us and has drawn us to Himself from the dominion of darkness. Colossians 1:12-13 AMP
THOUGHT: Inheritance is an important Biblical topic, and a promise here in Colossians. The NIV uses “inherit” 267 times and the KJV, 260 times. By contrast “money” is found less than half as often, and “marriage” not even a quarter as often in those two translations. But how much time do you or I spend thinking or studying about inheritance as opposed to money or marriage? Maybe we believe we have more impact on money and marriage than we do on inheritance, so we leave it for God to deal with. But Jesus said wherever your treasure is, your heart would follow, encouraging us to store up treasure in heaven that couldn’t be stolen or destroyed (Matt. 6:21; Luke 12:34).
Our savior asks us to take an active role in our promised inheritance.
Curiously, Paul speaks of an inheritance in the Light. We might think of inheritance as coming into land or riches – our mansion in glory – but imagine what an inheritance in light might be. Perhaps light is the currency of heaven? Matthew Henry calls this light, “the perfection of knowledge, holiness, and joy, by communion with God, who is light, and the Father of lights, Jas. 1:17; John 1:5.”
However it looks when we arrive, a reward is waiting, and Scripture says God has already given the down payment. The Holy Spirit is “the guarantee of our inheritance until we acquire possession of it” (Ephesians 1:14).
And so we go, from darkness to marvelous light (1 Pet. 2:9), to more light than we can imagine. A journey toward an inheritance in light.

PRAYER: We treasure the knowledge that you have an inheritance stored up for us, oh God. Imperishable [beyond the reach of change] and undefiled and unfading, reserved in heaven for us who are being protected and shielded by the power of God through our faith. (1 Peter 1:4-5 AMP).
