SCRIPTURE: By his divine power, God has given us everything we need for living a godly life. We have received all of this by coming to know him, the one who called us to himself by means of his marvelous glory and excellence. And because of his glory and excellence, he has given us great and precious promises. These are the promises that enable you to share his divine nature and escape the world’s corruption caused by human desires. 2 Peter 1:3-4 NLT
THOUGHT: Wait. Back up. Did you really take that promise in? You have all things that pertain to life and godliness (ESV). Everything you need for living the life God intends for you is already planted in the soil of your life.
That’s a very heady reality. And it’s one that will test your faith if you really attend to it. Do you believe, with all your heart, that you’ve been given everything you need to live a godly life? Is there anything that holds you back? Anything that keeps you running to the world for what you need, rather than pressing into what you’ve already been given?
Do you really believe the ability to live a godly life flows from knowing him intimately, to the point that you actually spend time getting to know the God of the Universe personally? Not knowing about him, but really knowing God? Talking to him; listening to him; trusting his promises because you’ve learned to trust his character.
Do you believe that somehow in the knowing, the tangible relationship, God lets you share his divine nature – making you more likely to withstand temptation and corruption because you begin to look at things the way he does?
Peter, who wrote these heady words, was no perfect human being. Blessedly, our holy book tells real stories of real men and women who struggle just like we do to grasp what God has said and is saying to us. Peter didn’t write these words in a vacuum, he lived every single one of them; he tested them, and in the end, he trusted them. I hope and pray we will do the same.
PRAYER: Thank you, God, that you invite us to test, taste and see, and ultimately trust our relationship with you. I pray each reader may invest in living out of what you’ve already planted inside them.
