SCRIPTURE: And God said to Noah, “This [rainbow] is the sign of the covenant (solemn pledge, binding agreement) which I have established between Me and all living things on the earth.” Genesis 9:17 AMP
THOUGHT: I’ve been traveling a lot in the past few years and it has astonished me how often I see a rainbow. Like a gawking tourist, I stop the car and take pictures every time, which is every part of the country. I’m sure people think to themselves in an irritated tone, “What? Has this lady never seen a rainbow before?” But to me, rainbows are more than beautiful, or magical, or mysterious.
They are all that, of course, but even more, they are spiritual. They are a holy symbol of a God who is both judgement and mercy. A God who makes a commitment to life and keeps his promises. They are like light in the darkness. Just the right amount of light at the right time in the right angle against the right amount of water droplets and stormy backdrop. The scientists among us can explain the physics perfectly, and the marketers can co-opt what God has made for tawdry purposes, but the deeper meaning is woven into creation and I can never forget.
So, I get out of the car and try again to capture promise among the clouds.
PRAYER: Oh God, thank you for your love for and commitment to life. Thank you for a promise to all living things that we can see in the midst of a storm. You are perfect in your judgements and we don’t deserve your mercy, but it’s been given us anyway — through your own loss. May we never forget.
