Storage Sheds

SCRIPTURE: For the mouth speaks what the heart is full of. A good man brings good things out of the good stored up in him, and an evil man brings evil things out of the evil stored up in him. Matthew 12:34-35 NIV

THOUGHT: Jesus, the living word, promises that the mouth speaks out of whatever the heart holds. His own good heart held truth about who God is, and what he is like. He told stories about lost coins, lost sheep, and lost sons to help the crowds understand God is a seeker and shepherd and good father. Words flowed out about a farmer who is generous with his seed and a Creator who is generous with sunshine and rain.

On the other hand, Jesus said that those who don’t store up good in themselves are like containers filling up with bad things and eventually, whatever you’ve made room for storing inside is going to come out of your mouth. Living water or something that might look more like sewage.

Take a few minutes today to think about what you’ve been storing. And what kind of words have been flowing out of your storage toward God, others and yourself?

Jesus goes on to say, “But I tell you that everyone will have to give account on the day of judgment for every empty word they have spoken (v. 36).” That’s a pretty important word from The Word on words.

PRAYER: Oh God, clean up my storage shed, and help me choose carefully what I store up there to offer you, others and myself.
