SCRIPTURE: What sorrow awaits you who build cities with money gained through murder and corruption! Has not the Lord of Heaven’s Armies promised that the wealth of nations will turn to ashes? They work so hard, but all in vain! For as the waters fill the sea, the earth will be filled with an awareness of the glory of the Lord. Habakkuk 2:12-14 NLT
THOUGHT: God’s promises cut both ways, don’t they? The bottom line, we might say after sorting and sifting and systematic theology, is that it matters to God how we live. God is the greatest stakeholder.
At least 30 times the NIV uses the phrase “God created,” or the words God and Creator or earth and creator to tell the big story of God. It’s all God’s.
I like this conclusion of Solomon, “This only have I found: God created mankind upright, but they have gone in search of many schemes (Ecc. 7:29 NIV).” Yup. Pretty much nails it. The prophet Habakkuk nails it too: to work so hard at building something that is only temporary – maybe to glorify your body, the work of your hands, or your ability to get your way through manipulation or power – is exercise in vain. It’s God’s world; it’s God’s glory that will fill the earth so fully someday that folks basking in their own glory will be left grasping at the tiny piece of real estate they thought was the world as it slips through their fingers.
SONG: Yours https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nNMClVv88oc
PRAYER: It’s all yours, God. And just like the waters fill the sea, this earth you created will be someday even more filled with your pure, brilliant, unadulterated glory. By your grace, my fingers won’t be grasping at anything — they’ll be up in the air with my hands and arms, praising you for such an amazing sight.
