Mysteries, Apologetics & Better Questions

SCRIPTURE:  Behold, You desire truth in the innermost being, and in the hidden part [of my heart] You will make me know wisdom. Psalm 51:6 AMP

THOUGHT: The life of faith is so much mystery.

I know, I know, there are great books and movies and sermon series based on apologetics – and how reasonable they are. Still, even after well-thought-out rationale, I find there are things I simply cannot explain. There are mysteries about what God does; mysteries about things Jesus said; mysteries about the work of the Holy Spirit. (And let’s don’t even get started on the mysteries of human thought and action!)

In a way, I want to argue that this is where faith emerges. It doesn’t take much faith to accept logic, but faith gets a workout the moment it doesn’t make sense that God could love you, or forgive you over and over when you come repentant, or be able to communicate truth into a secret place inside you, along with the wisdom to actually use it. Yet, these are the promises of God for us who believe.

The better question, I believe, isn’t can I believe because my mind has been convinced there is a God? That question only scratches the surface of the life of faith. It’s do I seek to know and love God using my whole heart, mind, soul and strength, despite what I cannot possibly know, not being God?

PRAYER: Oh God, we cannot know or understand everything, although intelligence is a wonderful gift from you. Where we get in trouble is trying to know things as a substitute for believing you, trusting you, seeking you, and following what you say, whether we want to or not. But you desire truth in our innermost being, and in the hidden part of our hearts, promise to make us know wisdom. Thank you for the promise of something beyond intelligence.
