SCRIPTURE: Let the morning bring me word of your unfailing love, for I have put my trust in you. Show me the way I should go, for to you I entrust my life. Psalm 143:8 NIV
THOUGHT: How often I’ve thought about the fact that just one word from God can change everything. As a songwriter, I’ve tried to write that song, but I’ve never gotten to the magnificent depth of it. However, and more importantly, I have heard a word from God, and seen its power to change my life. The psalmist didn’t believe he had all of God’s revelation – he always sought more, prayed harder, trusted more deeply. He longed for and needed a word from a living, active, relational God, and so do I.
In the passage I wrote about yesterday, David speaks about a God who confides in those who fear (love, respect, revere) him, making his covenantal love known to them. Here it’s the same. David pleads for a fresh word of God’s unfailing love in the morning, and a word revealing which way he should move because of his own deep trust for whatever God will say. He comes needy and expectant.
This is the relationship God desires. For some, it always seems to boil down to obedience – and I’m not trying to say that’s unimportant – but to me, there’s a piece that makes obedience organic and wonderful (“I delight to do your will, oh God.” Psalms 40:8), and if that piece is missing, our hearts are not as fully engaged in knowing our great God as they can be.
PRAYER: Oh God, we, like David, need a fresh word of unfailing love from a living, active, relational God. We too need instructions about where to move and what to do next; and we trust you and every word from your mouth.
