SCRIPTURE: Jesus said, “Come to me, all of you who are weary and carry heavy burdens, and I will give you rest.” Matthew 11:28 NIV
THOUGHT: Sometimes we just need rest, and all the time we need a shepherd-king who helps carry the load, rather than treating us like subjects to order around. Do this! Do that! Not good enough! Try again!
Today is one of those days. My whole being feels weary and burdened – from traveling the past few days, from the weight of hopes and dreams for those around me, from the constant change and fear and clashing of culture and the world, and on the list goes. Isaiah went so far as to say, “This is what the Sovereign Lord, the Holy One of Israel, says: In repentance and rest is your salvation, in quietness and trust is your strength (Is. 30:15 NIV).”
So, today is a day of rest and repentance (turning from my too busy mind, heart and life to listen to God’s invitation), of quietness and trust. I hope if you’re struggling with weariness, you will carve out time for the same. It’s a promise I don’t take lightly, and a promise I would be a fool to miss.
