What’s in a Name?

SCRIPTURE:  Then the Lord came down in the cloud and stood there with him and proclaimed his name, the Lord. And he passed in front of Moses, proclaiming, “The Lord, the Lord, the compassionate and gracious God, slow to anger, abounding in love and faithfulness, maintaining love to thousands, and forgiving wickedness, rebellion and sin. Yet he does not leave the guilty unpunished. Exodus 34:5-7

THOUGHT: Generally, when someone asks us who we are, we respond with our name. But think a little deeper. What does your name mean? What is most true about your character? How would you name yourself to God?

Moses asks God to show him his glory, and God responds by hiding Moses between some rocks and behind his own hand as he passes by. Until Moses is allowed to see his back, God’s glory is revealed with words: I am compassionate, gracious, slow to anger, abounding in love and faithfulness, maintaining love to thousands, and forgiving wickedness, rebellion and sin. And in my love and faithfulness, I am also just; you can depend on both mercy and justice.

For a moment, consider the power of the words of God and the power of the words of God about himself. Each one a promise; each one a pillar. Perfect love and perfect justice – exactly what the world is so hungry for, all wrapped up in the name and character of God.

PRAYER: Oh God, help me comprehend your glory as Moses did – in the words you use to define and describe yourself, and in catching just a glimpse of your back as you lead me through this world.
