Hospitable God

SCRIPTURE:  Look! I stand at the door and knock. If you hear my voice and open the door, I will come in, and we will share a meal together as friends. Revelation 3:20 NLT

THOUGHT: A Biblical review of any human who got an audience with God, who heard God’s voice, had a conversation with the angel of the Lord or some other visitation, came away changed. Consider the lives of Abraham, Moses, Gideon, Samuel, Isaiah, and Mary for example. Think of the disciples. There was a before and there was an after. A word from God changed things. A visit with God was life altering.

So imagine if you had the chance to sit down to a long, leisurely dinner with God’s son. Imagine the house cleaning and the meal preparation that would go on as you waited and anticipated that knock on the door. Imagine listening and laughing together, and eating and drinking in every word that falls from his mouth. Becoming closer friends. What would be the change after that rich conversation?

Isaiah 30:18 records this astonishing promise: “The Lord longs to be gracious to you; therefore he will rise up to show you compassion.” The promise here is that we have a hospitable God, one who pursues communion and fellowship with us. One who even waits, knocking at the door again, longing to be gracious.

What a promise. What a God.
