SCRIPTURE: Whoever dwells in the shelter of the Most High will rest in the shadow of the Almighty. I will say of the Lord, “He is my refuge and my fortress, my God, in whom I trust.” Psalm 91:1-2 NIV
THOUGHT: I can’t read this passage without thinking of my Mom. It was her favorite Psalm, and I’d like to look through the entire thing again over the next few days, pondering why she kept it so close to her heart.
Her parents were first generation immigrants as teens, with a long family history of relocation due to religious persecution. An extended family who, over several generations, fled first to Germany, then to Russia, and finally to the United States. She feared persecution, and stories from the Martyrs’ Mirror, read to her as a child, echoed loudly throughout her life.
As an adult, she and Dad moved far from their families to a dusty West Texas town where she found herself in a very small two-bedroom home raising five children. She felt a little like an immigrant, and it’s easy to see why such a beautiful set of words would be memorable and bring comfort.
God’s shadow is big enough to follow us wherever we go. If we choose to dwell in his shelter, he will give us rest. A little like the Pillar of Cloud (Ex. 13) that led the children of Israel as they left slavery in Egypt, God our refuge and fortress moves. We only need to trust.
