SCRIPTURE: Surely he will save you from the fowler’s snare and from the deadly pestilence. He will cover you with his feathers, and under his wings you will find refuge; his faithfulness will be your shield and rampart. Psalm 91:3-4 NIV
THOUGHT: I wonder if you, like I, think of our current conditions when you read about snares and pestilence (traps and plagues in people-speak)? As I mentioned yesterday, this was my Mom’s favorite Psalm, and although she’s not alive anymore, she doubtless heard her parents talk about the Spanish Flu epidemic and lived herself through WWII and its atrocities.
There is nothing new under the sun, said Solomon, what has been will be again, what has been done will be done again (Ecc. 1:9). I wish that only pertained to good, but the thing is, God knows that we will need to be rescued again and again from the mess that evil and sin has wrought, and the Psalmist (Solomon’s father, ironically) promises surely he will save you.
We have a mama wren who decided to build her nest in one of our hanging baskets on the back porch. I wanted to discourage her at first, thinking it would kill my coveted purple Torenia, but what a wonderful gospel lesson it has been. She and the new babies are completely hidden and she comes and goes often to deliver food. She not only covers them with her feathers, they are in a safe and hospitable refuge. This is the way God covers us and keeps us through the storm. His faithfulness surrounds us, protecting us from evil like a shield and fortress.

PRAYER: David used wonderful words to describe your sustaining care, God. Help us hold on to the mental image and gospel truth of you saving us, hiding us under your feathers and wings, in a refuge protected by your faithfulness.
