Whose side is God on, anyway?

SCRIPTURE:  When Joshua was near the town of Jericho, he looked up and saw a man standing in front of him with sword in hand. Joshua went up to him and demanded, “Are you friend or foe?”

“Neither one,” he replied. “I am the commander of the Lord’s army.” At this, Joshua fell with his face to the ground in reverence. “I am at your command,” Joshua said. “What do you want your servant to do?” Joshua 5:13-14 NLT

QUOTE: Sir, my concern is not whether God is on our side; my greatest concern is to be on God’s side, for God is always right. –Abraham Lincoln

THOUGHT: It is painful on some level to hear the commander of the armies of God say he is neither friend nor foe, but it forces us to remember God has a whole other agenda that we may not be privy to.

I think about that pretty often as I watch the chaos around us. I will always claim that God loves us; I will always claim his plan is good. But I will never claim to understand entirely what God understands. I will never suppose I am so right, God must be on my side. I would rather be consumed with the question am I on God’s side? Is my will submitted to the one who commands the commander of the armies of God? When I hear the news that the angel is neither for me nor against me, but loyal to whatever God asks, can I bow low to the ground as Joshua did, saying, “what do you want your servant to do?”

PRAYER: Oh God, your ways are unfathomable. We look around and think we know what needs to happen, but ultimately, you are the one who knows every secret agenda in the hearts of humans, and you are the one whose plan we need. Your will be done, on earth as it is in heaven.
