Angels & Little Ones

SCRIPTURE: See that you do not despise one of these little ones. For I tell you that their angels in heaven always see the face of my Father in heaven. Matthew 18:10 NIV

THOUGHT: One of our granddaughters has been in the hospital several times in the last couple of weeks. It has just torn my heart up, feeling so helpless to do anything but pray – and I have done a lot of that. But I admit, there has been a battle to trust God. With my own children, at least I had the motion of doing something, taking action, pressing for details if I didn’t get them, but now I am in charge of nothing…except my own prayers. She has two (very good) parents already, and they are part of my concerned heart. All our children and grandchildren are.

This verse gives me great comfort because Jesus gave children incredible status in a world where children weren’t always treated thus. He held them up as examples of faith without guile. He warned sternly against those who would cause their faith, their hearts, their lives to stumble and fall. And finally, he uttered this promise about the realities of the spiritual realm: They have angels in heaven who have such immediate access to God that they see his face always. That’s comfort. A savior who pleads for them, their anxious parents, grandparents, siblings, aunts, uncles, cousins and friends — and angels on assignment to watch them continually, one eye on God, the other on our beloved little ones.

PRAYER: Oh Jesus, thank you for these words of mystery. A reality we cannot see, but a word from your mouth that can be trusted. Don’t let us fail to be like the mighty angels as far as possible; one eye on you, the other on our beloved little ones.
