SCRIPTURE: When I thought, “My foot slips,” your steadfast love, O Lord, held me up. Psalm 94:18 ESV
THOUGHT: I think the metaphor of mountain climbing is a good one for the journey of faith — but I’d be curious to hear from you. What is the picture in your mind as you make your way through this life, learning to lean on Jesus as the old song says?
Today’s verse is about something I confess to experiencing all the time. I feel like I’m slipping – like the mountain is just too steep sometimes. If any of you have read the timeless classic Hinds Feet on High Places, I relate to poor Much Afraid with her twisted feet, moving toward the promise of the Shepherd of Love – he will heal them, but it’s after a perilous journey with stern companions.
Whether it’s literal and physical, or metaphoric, mental, emotional or spiritual, slips are happening. My trust wavers when I read the next news story, my mind goes to dark things when I know the truth of faith is brighter, a relationship seems slippery, I can’t find a word I want, my ankle starts to twist – you get the picture.
Isn’t it the gospel news that God’s love holds us up when our feet are slipping? We can reach out for it over and over, and in the act of reaching he sees our heart and our faith, and catches us, holding us up. Then, we have another story to tell of his faithfulness.

PRAYER: Oh God, we have to keep climbing if we want stories to tell of your faithfulness. Help us lean on, and lean into your steadfast love, and climb, unafraid.
