The S(word) as Protection

SCRIPTURE: Take the helmet of salvation and the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God. Ephesians 6:17 NIV

THOUGHT: Not only does the s(word) have the ability to impact us inwardly (see yesterday’s devo), it also has power to protect us against outward threat.

After Jesus was baptized by John, he was drawn to the wilderness by the Holy Spirit for a time of testing. Was he ready for the ministry and spiritual warfare that lay ahead? Would he follow his father’s lead? Could he discipline his flesh? Had the s(word) been allowed to fully impact his inner life?

The answer was a big “yes.” At every turn, it was God’s word, backed by God’s Spirit, that came out of his mouth – until his greatest enemy (and ours), Satan, was silenced. The word was Jesus’ sword, his weapon of protection and strength.

We all face times of testing and temptation, and hiding God’s word deep inside, where it can divide soul from spirit, is the surest way to have it ready to come out of our heart, mind and mouth: a weapon of protection to silence our biggest enemy.

PRAYER: Oh God, thank you for your powerful s(word), a weapon of your Spirit that both penetrates our deepest inner life and protects us in times of testing and temptation.
