SCRIPTURE: In that day the Lord Almighty will be a glorious crown, a beautiful wreath for the remnant of his people. He will be a spirit of justice to the one who sits in judgment, a source of strength to those who turn back the battle at the gate. Isaiah 28:5-6
THOUGHT: There is good news in Isaiah 28 – just like there’s always good news in God’s word. If you read yesterday’s devo, (or if you have the daily experience of what seems like a thousand things going wrong) you likely need some. It’s the little word remnant. When I was a child, that meant a scrap from the fabric pile in my mom’s cedar chest, or a bargain basement yard at the store that had been separated from the bolt.
Think about that for a minute – a scrap, separated from the rest. While there’s truth to it, it’s not the whole picture. God paints it differently.
The remnant is beautiful to God. The men and women and children who love him through or despite a culture that rejects him. They don’t buy the lie of verses 15-18 (if you read the entire chapter) and they don’t reach for anything but God to fill their emptiness (see the first part of the chapter). They seek life from the one who gave it to them – and then the one who gave it to them gives them even more. He meets them with a glorious crown, a beautiful wreath, a spirit of justice for those who lead and a source of strength for those who fight to turn back the battle at the gate. There is a battle at the gate of every human life, and those who are fighting to turn it back surely need supernatural help.
Keep on the journey all you scraps and remnants. God loves you and is coming to provide power, beauty, justice and strength.
PRAYER: Thank you for the spiritual picture of the remnant, God. We may be a leftover scrap of what you desired when you created humans, but you find us beautiful anyway.
